Upshur Books is seeking a Full-Time Manager to oversee all aspects of its soon-to-be-opened bookstore located at 827 Upshur Street NW. The bookstore will have a strong connection to the Petworth community and will focus on literary fiction and poetry, local authors, art books, and independent publications. The bookstore will also host literary and cultural events. Energetic candidates with a strong passion for books and previous bookstore management experience are encouraged to apply. -As directed by the Owner, the manager is responsible for all activities related to the merchandising of books, gifts, and other miscellaneous items. This includes meeting with vendors, establishing quantities to be ordered, generating purchase orders, receiving goods through the inventory/POS system, and evaluating price mark-ups and markdowns.
-Direct staff in the performance of all day-to-day operations.
-Supervise sales floor and cashiering functions and provide excellent customer service.
-Hire and train permanent, temporary and interns as needed in all phases of operation of the Bookstore.
-Complete or supervise all store opening and closing procedures on a daily basis; effect the daily closeout process of cash registers and prepare bank deposits.
-Communicate effectively and establish ordering deadlines with owner.
-Direct the receiving and stocking and/or preparing of all incoming and outgoing shipments.
-Program in-store events and events in the adjacent Reading Room at Petworth Citizen.
-Collaborate with Staff of Petworth Citizen to create cross-promotional events or specials.
-Prepare administrative and operational reports as required.
-Be competent in all aspects of the point-of-sale system and the related equipment including cash registers and personal computer and printer applications.
-Bachelor’s degree; Previous Book Store Management experience a plus
-3+ years of retail experience
-Exceptional organizational and time-management abilities
-Strong interpersonal and rapport-building skills
-Excellent verbal and written communication skills
-Proficient in MS Excel, Word
